Oil Change

Just did my first Savage oil change. Both Clymer and the Suzuki owner's manual say that our bikes take 2.5 U.S. Quarts when the filter gets changed. I changed the filter and I only put in about 2.2 quarts, and I'm probably on the high side of the gauge. I ran the bike and rechecked the level. So, is it possible I didn't get all the old oil out (I really thought I had it all)? I've seen other posts that claim 2.0 quarts is the right answer, even with a filter change.

By the way, my clymer manual says the plug to drain the oil is 17mm. On my 2001 it's 14mm. My contribution to the technical knowledge here :-) The box wrench solution made loosening the plug easy. Only real mistake I made was slopping some oil from the filter housing down on the exhaust. I'm getting a nice white smoke effect now.
